HEALTH MINISTER DIRECTS INVESTIGATION INTO HEALTH SCARE AT GOROKA GENERAL HOSPITAL

FM100 News

Health and HIV & AIDS Minister Elias Kapavore has directed both the World Health Organization and technical experts from the National Department of Health to immediately visit and carry out an investigation into what is occurring at the Goroka General Hospital.

Minister Kapavore issued a statement today responding to recent media reports calling for Goroko General Hospital to be quarantined due to 35 recent deaths at the hospital.

The recent media reports have linked these deaths to Klebsiella, a rare disease often caused by poor infection control.

Minister Kapavore stated the investigation will include an analysis of the cause of any deaths that have occurred.

He noted that it is important to note that the National Emergency Operations Centre that oversees and manages such incidences has not received any formal report by the Provincial Hospital or the Provincial Health Authority regarding this issue.

The investigation team left for Goroka today and will provide an analysis upon their return.

The Minister will be going to Goroka tomorrow to assess the situation.
